     CURSE 0F THE JAGUAR

by K.M. ROBERTS

2.

FADE IN:

EXT. YAQUI CAMP-NIGHT

TITLE OVER:

Northern Mexico, 1866

A SHAMAN, and a six LESSER PRIESTS, dance before a fire in the

camp of some, so far, indifferent YAQUIS.

SHAMAN

(in Yaqui)

By Those Whose Names Cannot be spoken...

A group of thuggish JAGUAR KNIGHTS bring in a struggling MEXICAN

GIRL.

SHAMAN

...I conjure with blood and fire...

The BARONESS LIESL VON HEXENBERG, she is a beautiful woman made

up as an Aztec priestess.

SHAMAN

...And call upon them to accept this

sacrifice...

He dances over to the Baroness, and hands her an obsidian knife.

The Baroness joins the macabre dance.

SHAMAN

...This woman-child...unknown to

man...daughter of our enemies...

The Jaguar Knights strip the girl, and tie her to a stone altar

by the fire.

SHAMAN

...So that her heart can be purifed

in the sacred flames...

Waving the knife, The Baroness dances to the girl. She stands

over the girl.

SHAMAN

So mote it be!

The Baroness slams the knife down, and the girl screams. A few

moments later, the Baroness tosses a bloody human heart into the

fire.

LESSER PRIESTS

So Mote It Be...

3.

Covered with blood, the Baroness, dances to a Knight, and gives

him a gruesome lap dance, rubbing the blood on him. The Knight

squalls catlike, and he falls to his knees. He transforms into

a screaming Jaguar. The Yaquis fall back, impressed.

EXT. DESERT-DAY

Two men in battered Confederate uniforms ride up to a ridge

jutting out of the desert. They are JOHN KENYON, a handsome,

atheletic man, and BEN MCSHANE, a powerfully built, younger man.

JOHN

Well, it looks peaceful enough...

They ride up to a gap in the ridge. They are met by a mixed

squad of Mexican and American TOUGHS, all brandishing rifles.

BEN

Howdy...

MULDOON, the leader of the squad, approaches them.

MULDOON

And what the hell are you doin' here,

Reb?

John waves his hat mockingly at him.

JOHN

We come seeking Sanctuary.

MULDOON

And how'd you learn to say that?

JOHN

A man named Burke Jamieson told

me.

Muldoon shoves his rifle muzzle into John's face.

MULDOON

And where is he?

JOHN

Dead...Apaches, three days ago.

MULDOON

Did he tell you anything else?

John pulls a silver coin out of his tunic.

JOHN

He also told me to give you this.

4.

He tosses the coin to Muldoon, who looks it over.

MULDOON

It's one of ours...

He shoves the rifle back into John's face.

MULDOON

But you coulda taken this offa Jamieson

after you sweated the password outta

him, then killed him.

JOHN

Look, we're tired, dirty, hungry,

and alone...and there's nothing to

prevent your boss from killing us

later on...

Muldoon cocks his rifle.

MULDOON

And I can kill you now, Reb.

Ben draws and fires, shooting the rifle out of Muldoon's hand.

He then covers Muldoon as the others react.

BEN

He'll be the first one shot.

GONZALES, a pantherish man with a big grin, rides in.

GONZALES

What's going on here?

MULDOON

These Rebs want in...they know the

password...and they got one of our

tokens too.

GONZALES

So...what's they problem?

MULDOON

Donovan tells me to be careful who

I let in...

Gonzales looks at John.

GONZALES

Who are you?

JOHN

Colonel John Kenyon...Confederate

army...retired...

5.

John gestures to Ben.

JOHN

Sergeant Major Ben McShane...also

retired.

GONZALES

You are the one the Yanguis call

"Johnny Reb?"

JOHN

Been called that.

Gonzales gives John and Ben a good look over.

GONZALES

Do you have a sponsor?

JOHN

Had one...Burke Jamieson...but he's

dead...

GONZALES

I see...

(a beat)

Then I, Ramon Gonazles will sponsor

you...

He faces Muldoon and his men.

GONZALES

Let them pass...

The toughs stand down, and Ben holsters his gun.

MULDOON

I was just followin' orders

GONZALES

Si, si...

He turns to John.

GONZALES

Follow me.

He rides through the gap. John and Ben follow

EXT. SANCTUARY

Gonzales takes John and Ben into the converted remains of an old

mission. The population is primarily Mexicans and Anglos with a

few Native-Americans thrown in.

6.

GONZALES

Welcome, my friends, to Sanctuary.

A group of SENORITAS gather around Gonzales. With a lusty

laugh he sweeps one into his saddle, and they exchange a kiss.

GONZALES

As you can see, some of the natives

are friendly.

Ben notices that some of the girls are giving him and John some

speculative glances.

BEN

Feel like makin'ourselves to home,

Colonel?

JOHN

Let's do some more reconaissance

before we accept their surrender,

Sergeant.

Two riders come up to meet them. BASS DONOVAN, grinning rogue

of a man, and ANDRE DESCATRES, who's affecting the strutting

manner of a French imperial officer.

DONOVAN

(Irish accent)

I see you've brought some newcomers

with you, Gonzales.

Gonzales gives Donovan a mocking bow.

GONZALES

Senor Donovan...allow me to introduce

Colonel John Kenyon and Sergeant

Ben McShane...Confederate Army...

retired...

Gonzales gestures to Donovan.

GONZALES

Colonel...Bass Donovan...our host...

He gestures to Descartes.

GONZALES

And Andre Descartes...Mr. Dononvan's

military advisor...

Descartes stiffens in anger.

DESCARTES

My rank is General.

7.

GONZALES

Only in this valley...if a deserter

can even still lay claim to a rank...

With a snarl, Descartes grabs for the cavalry saber at his side.

Donovan restrains him.

DONOVAN

Now, boys...let's not fight...

Descartes releases his saber.

DESCARTES

As you wish, Monsieur Donovan...I

will let this pig live, for now...

Descartes spins his horse around, and rides off. Gonzales flips

him a mocking salute.

GONZALES

Vive le Empereur...

Donovan gives John a good look over.

DONOVAN

So...you're Johnny Reb, eh?

JOHN

Been called that.

DONOVAN

And how do you know Senor Gonzales?

GONZALES

We've just met...Jamieson was bringing

them in. But Apaches killed him three

days ago. So I decided to sponsor

them myself.

Donovan gives Gonzales a suspicious look.

DONONVAN

Why?

GONZALES

Johnny Reb would be quite a feather

in our cap...

Donovan looks at John again,

DONOVAN

Alright...come with me, Colonel...

Gonzales will see your Sergeant

settled.

8.

Donovan turns and rides toward a large building at the far end

of the compound. John follows him.

INT. SALOON

Donovan takes John into a bustling and opulent saloon.

DONOVAN

Wouldja believe this useta be the

main chapel?

JOHN

I bet you don't get many pikers when

it comes time to pass the plate.

Donovan laughs, and claps John on the back.

DONOVAN

My office is in the back.

He takes John to the back, passing a table where FRENCHY, a

lovely young woman, is playing poker with a half dozen PLAYERS,

including JAKE and LUDEY. She watches John and Dononvan go into the...

OFFICE

...Which is as sumptiously decorated as the saloon.

DONOVAN

What's your poison, Colonel?

JOHN

Bourbon, neat...

Donovan goes to a liqour cabinet behind his desk, and fixes two

drinks.

DONOVAN

How did you hear about us?

JOHN

You hear rumors on the border...I

followed one up...

Donovan goes to John and hands him his drink.

DONOVAN

As simple as that?

JOHN

It took some looking.

9.

Donovan looks him over again, then he downs his drink.

DONOVAN

Fortunately, for the both of us,

I got me a special project comin'

up...one that needs a good cavalry

officer.

JOHN

What kind of special project?

The Baroness enters, clad in the height of Paris fashion, and

every inch the aristocrat.

BARONESS

Sebastian, I...

She sees John.

BARONESS

Sorry...I didn't realize you were

busy.

DONOVAN

I always have time for you, darlin'.

He gestures toward John.

DONOVAN

Colonel John Kenyon...

He gestures to the Baroness.

DONOVAN

Colonel...her Excellency...the Baroness

Liesl Von Hexenberg.

John kisses her hand.

JOHN

Enchanted, your Excellency.

The Baroness looks him over, liking what she sees.

BARONESS

Aren't you awfully young to be a

Colonel?

JOHN

Isn't this a strange place to find

a Baroness?

She laughs musically.

10.

BARONESS

I approve of your new aquisition,

Sebastian...in fact, I insist that

he dine with us tonight.

DONOVAN

I was just about to invite him, love

John looks at his uniform.

JOHN

I'm afraid you find me in somewhat

embarrassed circumstances...

DONOVAN

No need to worry...we got some dress

uniforms in stock...includin' one

for a Reb Colonel.

Donovan downs his drink, and places the glass on the desk.

DONOVAN

I'll send it and me tailor over

to your new quarters...

John downs his drink.

JOHN

And when shall I be expected?

DONOVAN

About eight...I'm set up in the

old Abbot's house...right next

door.

JOHN

I'll be there...

John bows to the Baroness.

JOHN

Your Excellency...

He exits. The Baroness watches his departure with lustful

intent, which irritates Donovan.

DONOVAN

So...what do you think?

BARONESS

He bears watching...there are certainly

hidden layers to this boy colonel.

Donovan stands up.

11.

DONOVAN

Which you fully intend explorin',

no doubt.

The Baroness turns to Donvovan.

BARONESS

Jealousy is vulgar, liebchen...and

you forget that you share my bed...

not the other way around...

She runs a sharp, fingernail along his throat.

BARONESS

Just don't forget who is the real

master of Sanctuary...verstanden?

DONOVAN

Yes, m'love...

SALOON

Frenchy faces Ludey.

FRENCHY

Raise or call, M'sieu?

Ludey throws his cards onto the table in disgust.

LUDEY

Hell, I'm out...

Frenchy turns to Jake, who's oozing overconfidence.

FRENCHY

Raise or call, M'sieu?

Jake bets.

JAKE

I'll see your five dollars...and

raise you another five.

Frenchy bets.

FRENCHY

House sees your five, and raises

another five.

JAKE

You tryin' to buy the pot, girlie

girl?

12.

FRENCHY

Raise or call, M'sieu?

Jake looks desperately at Ludey. Ludey shakes his head.

LUDEY

She's already got all of mine.

Ludey takes out a dented watch from his pocket.

JAKE

This watch cost me eight dollars

in Austin...

FRENCHY

The House only accepts cash, M'sieu.

Ludey shows the watch to the other players.

JAKE

Any of you need a watch?

PLAYER

You're just delyin' the inevitable,

friend...

JAKE

I got me a winnin' hand here. And

ain't gonna fold it because this

Creole bitch...

John walks up to the table.

JOHN

What seems to be the trouble?

JAKE

I got me a winnin' hand...and Madam-Mo-Sell

High And Mighty here's tryin' to

buy the goddamn pot!

He shoves the watch into John's face.

JAKE

You need an eight dollar watch, Reb?

John takes the watch, and looks it over.

JOHN

It may have been worth eight dollars

new...but it's seen some use since

then...

John takes a five dollar gold piece out of his pocket.

13.

JOHN

But in the interest of good sportsmanship

I'll pay you a half eagle for it.

He gives the coin to Jake, who slams it on the table.

JAKE

There...I see the House's five dollars...

now let's see those goddamn cards!

FRENCHY

You first, M'sieu.

Jake shows his hand.

JAKE

Full house, beat that!

Frenchy shows her hand.

FRENCHY

Four queens...

Jake's jaw hits the floor.

JAKE

Cheatin' bitch...

Donovan enters.

DONOVAN

What's goin' on here?

JAKE

This Creole whore just cheated me...

FRENCHY

Look in his vest.

Jake tries to rise, but John puts his hand on Jake's shoulder

and holds him down. Dononvan looks in his vest, and pulls out

some cards.

DONOVAN

Well, well...what do we have here?

JOHN

Somebody who had better be careful

about throwing the word "cheat" around...

especially to a lady.

JAKE

Lady...she's a goddamn Creole whore!

14.

Donovan backhands Jake.

DONOVAN

Jake...you've been warned about this

before. One more incident, and we'll

be forced evict you from Sanctuary.

Donovan gestures and two BOUNCERS come over.

DONOVAN

Get him outta here.

The Bouncers pick Jake up, and haul him out of the saloon.

JAKE

Damn your eyes, Donovan! I paid

my fee like everyone else...you can't

do this to me!

Frenchy rises and hands the gold piece back to John

FRENCHY

I believe this belongs to you, M'sieu.

JOHN

Merci, Mademoiselle...?

She offers John her hand.

FRENCHY

Antoinette Le Clerc...but most folks

just call me "Frenchy."

John kisses her hand

JOHN

Enchante'...

Frenchy notices Ludey is trying to get his gun out. She reaches

behind her neck, pulls out a knife, and flings it into Ludey's

heart, and he falls. Donovan goes over to the body.

DONOVAN

Alright, alright...let's get this

stiff outta here.

Two more bouncers show up, and haul Ludey out of the room.

DONOVAN

And for Chrissakes...don't let Jake

see it.

He gives Frenchy a stern look.

15.

DONOVAN

Next time, call a bouncer...that's

what I bloody well hire 'em for.

He goes to the bar. Frenchy faces John.

FRENCHY

You still have the advantage of me,

M'sieu.

JOHN

Kenyon...John Kenyon...

(a beat)

Burke Jamieson told me about you.

FRENCHY

Really...is he back then?

John's expression becomes regretful.

JOHN

I'm afraid not, Mademoisielle...Apaches

killed him three days ago.

FRENCHY

Merde...

John takes Frenchy's hand.

JOHN

Mademoiselle...I must ask a favor

of you. I have been invited to dine

with Mr. Donovan and his lady, and

I am without an escort...would you...?

FRENCHY

Certaiment...

(whispering)

Past the fountain...third jacal

on the left...and be there early...

John kisses Frenchy's hand again.

JOHN

Merci...until tonight then.

John heads for the door. Donovan catches up with him.

DONOVAN

You're a fast worker, boyo...

JOHN

When you live on the dodge...you

kind of have to be.

16.

DONOVAN

True enough...by the way...watch

out for Jake, he's the type who holds

a grudge.

John reaches the door.

JOHN

Figured as much.

EXT. SANCTUARY

John goes out into the main compound. He finds Ben surrounded

by several senoritas. Ben sees him and snaps to attention.

JOHN

At ease, Sergeant.

John tips his hat to the senoritas.

JOHN

My apologies, ladies...but the Sergeant

and I have important matters to discuss

He and Ben go off to one side.

BEN

I take it you met the gal.

JOHN

Yeah...but we didn't get to talk.

(a beat)

We're dining with Donovan tonight...

I imagine we'll catch up then.

They walk on a little further.

BEN

I hope so...I've been havin' bothersome

feelin's ever since we got here...

JOHN

What kind of "bothersome feelin's."

BEN

Welll...it's kinda hard to explain...

let's just say Grandma McShane would

call this place a "hant."

Gonzales catches up with them.

GONZALES

And what, praytell, is a "hant."

17.

JOHN

It's the short version of "haunted."

GONZALES

Ohhh...

He claps Ben on the shoulder.

GONZALES

I know what you're talking about,

my friend...all these old missions

are full of ghosts...but this one...

He shudders theatrically, and crosses himself.

GONZALES

...It is said that the monks here

turned from God, and practiced the

Black Mass...

They walk on a bit further.

GONZALES

And even before then...the Aztecs,

and the Toltecs practiced blood sacrifice

on this very spot.

BEN

Well...I'm Cherokee on one side...

Carolina hill folk on the other...

so iffen there are ghosts about,

I reckon I'll be the one to feel

'em.

Gonzales laughs, then he turns to John.

GONZALES

Colonel...I understand you have been

invited to dinner with Senor Donovan

tonight.

JOHN

Yes...

GONZALES

I can help you plan a strategy...

John gives Gonzales a suspicious look.

GONZALES

You know that you will be "felt out,"

as the expression goes. With my

help you can pass the test with flying

colors.

18.

JOHN

And what do you get out of it?

Gonzales takes out a cigarillo, and lights it.

GONZALES

We all have our agendas, my friend...

by helping you...I advance mine...

JOHN

How?

Gonzales blows a smoke ring.

GONZALES

You'll find out...when the time is

right.

EXT. SANCTUARY-NIGHT

John walks past the fountain to a group of jacales. He goes up

to one and knocks on the door.

JOHN

It's Kenyon...

FRENCHY (o.s.)

Entre'

John opens the door, and goes inside.

INT. FRENCHY'S PLACE

John enters a hut where an effort has been made to make it more

comfortable, including a vanity, where Frenchy is dealing out

tarot cards.

FRENCHY

I won't be a minute...

She places three cards on the vanity. They are the Knight of

Swords, the Queen of Swords, and the Lovers. This result surprises her.

JOHN

Something happen to the tall, dark

stranger?

Frenchy reshuffles her deck.

FRENCHY

Do I detect a scoffer?

19.

John chuckles sardonically.

JOHN

Not really...I saw Sioux and Cheyenne

medicine men do some impressive things

while I was serving in the Dakotas

before the war.

FRENCHY

Fair enough...

Frenchy puts her deck down, and rises.

FRENCHY

Well...

She twirls before him, showing off her ensemble.

FRENCHY

How do I look?

JOHN

All you lack is a pair of wings...

FRENCHY

Obviously...you don't know me very

well.

She points to a locket hanging on the bed post.

FRENCHY

Would you be a dear, and fetch me

that locket?

John goes and picks up the locket. It opens in his hand,

revealing the portrait of a handsome man, and a beautiful woman.

Upset, Frenchy comes up and snatches it away.

JOHN

I'm sorry...it just opened.

FRENCHY

I know...it's designed to open when

you press the sides...you couldn't

have known.

She takes a deep breath, and goes back into professional agent

mode.

FRENCHY

Would you help me with this?

John helps her wrap the locket around her neck.

20.

FRENCHY

Now...what happened to Burke Jamieson?

JOHN

Like I said...we ran into Apaches

three days ago...shots were exchanged...

he caught a bullet...end of story...

Frenchy looks at herself in the mirror.

JOHN

How long did you two work together?

FRENCHY

A little over a year...ever since

Angus Buchanan recruited me.

JOHN

And before that?

She turns to face him.

FRENCHY

I was a spy...in fact...I was a

good ol' Rebel too...Johnny Reb...

(a beat)

Or do you prefer Grey Wolf?

JOHN

I prefer Colonel John Kenyon of the

Texas Mounted Volunteers...

FRENCHY

Fair enough...

She takes his arm.

FRENCHY

Come on, we have work to do.

EXT. SANCTUARY-DAY

Ben walks the compound. LUPE, a pretty Mexican woman, walks up

to him a flashes him a "come hither" look.

LUPE

You look lonely, Senor.

BEN

And needin' a drink too. I was headin'

for the saloon to kill both birds.

Lupe snuggles up to Ben.

21.

LUPE

I have tequila in my jacal...and

food...

(a beat)

...And I am lonely, too.

Ben slides an arm around Lupe.

BEN

Well, ma'am...that's the best offer

I've had all day...

LUPE

Gracias, Senor...

She rests her head on Ben's shoulder, and smiles, revealing

large, sharp, canines.

INT. DINING ROOM

John and Frenchy sit at a long table in an elegantly appointed

dining room with Donovan, the Baroness, Gonzales, and SAXON, a

hardcase who's feeling out of place in this opulent setting.

BARONESS

Poor Maxie...he's hopelessly naive,

and insulated from everything in

Mexico City...

She smiles mockingly at Descartes.

BARONESS

...And the French have managed to

botch things up...as usual

She faces Gonzales.

BARONESS

Wouldn't you say so, Senor Gonzales?

Gonzales takes a cigarillo out of his jacket.

GONZALES

Your Excellency...a man like me cannot

afford the luxery of politics...

He puts the cigarillo in his mouth, and lights it.

GONZALES

From my point of view...Maximillian

and Juarez are two dogs fighting over

the same manger...the more they fight,

the better it is for me.

22.

DESCARTES

The classic mercenary's answer.

Gonzales grins at Descartes.

GONZALES

And who are you, Senor Descartes,

if not a classic mercenary?

Descartes rises quickly.

DESCARTES

I am a soldier of France!

GONZALES

You were a soldier of France...until

you deserted to us.

Descartes grabs at his saber. Donovan rises.

DONOVAN

Now, now...we're all gentleman here.

Descartes returns to his seat, glowering at Gonzales.

DESCARTES

Some of us, are.

The Baroness turns to Frenchy.

BARONESS

And you, my dear, I understand you're

from New Orleans. I hear it's a charming

city.

FRENCHY

I've always found it so, your Excellency.

BARONESS

And very wicked, so I hear.

Frenchy plays angerily with her knife.

FRENCHY

It has its moments, your Excellency.

BARONESS

Just like you, mon petit, charming,

but with your wicked moments.

Frenchy flashes the Baroness a warning glare. Saxon rises.

SAXON

Pardon me, ladies...but this old

comanchero needs his sleep.

23.

He exits hurriedly.

JOHN

Leaving the saloon before the gunfight

starts.

The Baroness gives Frenchy a poisonously sweet smile.

BARONESS

Don't misunderstand me, mon petit.

A woman should balance charm with

wickedness. Some of us even weave

it into an art form.

FRENCHY

Well, your Excellency...some art

is worthy for fine homes and museums...

the rest is only fit to be sold cheaply

on the streets.

The Baroness doubletakes, while Gonzalez chuckles.

GONZALES

A palpable hit, your Excellency.

BARONESS

And how did you snare the Colonel

with your art, my dear?

FRENCHY

I was dealing cards in the saloon,

and he helped me with a tinhorn.

The Baroness gives John another appraising look.

BARONESS

So, like Lohengrin, he came to your

rescue?

FRENCHY

Sort of...only without the swan.

The Baroness takes John's hand.

BARONESS

Why, Colonel...I never realized you

were such a gallant cavilier...

John shifts uncomfortably.

BARONESS

Perhaps I should arrange to be in

distress sometime, so you can rescue

me.

24.

FRENCHY

Oh, I'm sure you never have a problem

getting out of your distress...your

Excellency.

The Baroness glowers at Frenchy while Gonazles chuckles.

GONZALES

Your turn, your Excellency...

INT. LUPE'S HUT

Ben sits at a table, wiping a plate with a piece of cornbread.

Across the table, Lupe watches him with great interest.

BEN

I'll say this...you're a pretty fair

cook...Senorita...uhhh...?

LUPE

Lupe...

Ben offers her his hand.

BEN

Howdy, Lupe...I'm Ben...

She takes his hand, and gives the palm a lick. Ben pulls his

hand back.

BEN

Lupe...I ain't anythin' fancy...

I like thin's simple.

LUPE

I was just tasting you, Ben.

BEN

Welllll...there are better ways to

do that.

He moves to kiss her, but she playfully moves away.

LUPE

Wait, Senor...

She rises and strips.

LUPE

Is this simple enough for you?

BEN

It surely is.

25.

Ben rises, and strips. Lupe goes to a cot on the far end of the

jacal, and reclines upon it. Ben comes over and lies beside

her.

LUPE

Do you mind if I start?

BEN

Honey, you just...

Lupe rolls on top of him, and smiles. Ben sees her oversize

canines.

BEN

My...what big teeth you got, Grandma.

LUPE

The better to eat you with, mi amour.

She moves to bite him, he flings her off of him.

LUPE

Not simple enough for you, Gringo?

She morphs into a semi-feline creature. Ben leaps off the bed

and runs toward the door. Lupe tackles him, and he falls near

the fireplace.

LUPE

It'll only hurt more if you struggle.

BEN

For who?

Ben reaches into the fire, and out a burning log, and smacks

Lupe on head with it. Her hair catches fire, and she backs

away, screaming and beating the fire out.

LUPE

You'll pay for that, Gringo!

Ben rises and holds the log in front of him.

BEN

Back off, Skinwalker!

LUPE

Sooo...you have some Indio in you...

eh, Gringo?

BEN

My mama was a princess of the Cherokee

nation...and she told me how to kill

your kind, bitch.

26.

LUPE

And I know how to kill your kind,

Gringo!

Lupe squalls, and her transformation starts up again. Ben looks

around, and sees an oil lamp hanging on the wall. He runs

toward it.

LUPE

NOOOO!!!

She leaps at him. Ben shoves the log into her mouth. She backs

off again. Ben grabs the lamp, and flings it at her. Lupe

bursts into flame, and morphs back into her human form.

EXT. SANCTUARY

John and Frenchy walk across the compound.

JOHN

I've seen artillery exchanges that

were less nasty.

FRENCHY

It was fun, though...and it did both

our covers some good...

They stop in front of her jacal. Frenchy gives him a little

smile.

FRENCHY

...And neither will this...

She embraces john and gives him a deep kiss, catching him off

guard.

FRENCHY

(whispering)

We're probably being watched...so

you'd better return this...

John kisses Frenchy back. The kiss grows in intensity for a

moment. Then they pull away.

FRENCHY

And now for Act Two...

She takes John by the hand, and they go to the door. Jake

appears, drunk and bearing a knife.

JAKE

I wanna talk with the two of ya...

27.

He points at Frenchy.

JAKE

...'Shpechially her...

John steps forward.

JOHN

Neighbor...you're...

Jake slashes at John, John dodges. They circle each other.

JAKE

I'm gonna gut ya firsht...then I'm

gonna cut her fash up...

Jake slashes with the knife. John grabs his wrist, and slams

him against the wall.

JOHN

Drop it!

John slams Jake against the wall again.

JOHN

I said drop it!

Jake drops the knife.

JOHN

Okay...here's how it works...you

agree to go home, and sleep it off,

and I let you go...savvy?

JAKE

She kilt Ludey...besh pard I ever...

John slams Jake against the wall again.

JOHN

Look...I don't want to have to hurt

you...

JAKE

O...okay...

John loosens his grip.

JOHN

You'd better mean it, neigh...

John leaps upon him, knocking him down. They wrestle on the

ground a few moments. John gets on top, and slugs Jake

unconscious.

28.

JOHN

That's why I hate fighting drunks...

they never know when to quit.

He gets up and notices Frenchy putting a derringer back in it's

holster on her ankle.

FRENCHY

Just in case...

John wipes some blood from his mouth, and looks at Jake.

JOHN

So..what do we do with him?

Gonzales shows up with two of his MEN.

GONZALES

Allow me to take care of that, my

friend.

He claps John on the shoulder.

GONZALES

I saw the whole thing...you were

muy caballero...

He sighs theatrically.

GONZALES

It did my heart good to see a man

defend the honor of a lady...especially

in a place like Sanctuary.

FRENCHY

Well...some might question the lady

part...

Gonzales kisses her hand.

GONZALES

To a true caballero, you are all

ladies, senorita.

He turns to his men.

GONZALES

And what are you two waiting for?

He gestures toward Jake.

GONZALES

Andele, andele...

29.

The men pick up Jake, and carry him off. Gonzales faces John.

GONZALES

Be careful, my friend, his mood will

not sweeten when he sobers up.

JOHN

I wouldn't expect it to.

GONZALES

Very well, then...

He tips his hat to John and Frenchy.

GONZALES

Buenos noches, my friends...and I

wish you both a most...enjoyable...

evening.

He exits, chuckling lavaciously.

FRENCHY

Let's get inside, before something

else happens.

John takes her arm.

JOHN

Good idea...

They go into the jacal.

INT. FRENCHY'S PLACE

John closes the door. Frenchy looks out the window.

FRENCHY

I don't have a back door...so you're

stuck here for the night...

JOHN

Okay...just put a blanket on the

floor...

Frenchy takes off her locket.

FRENCHY

Nooo...we are not playing this like

a Scott novel...we will both share

the bed...

She strips to her underwear.

30.

JOHN

I'll stay dressed then...

Frenchy gets into the bed.

FRENCHY

And wrinkle that dress uniform? Certainly

not...

JOHN

You're making it hard for me to be

a gentleman.

FRENCHY

Considering your reputation...I wouldn't

think it would bother you.

John strips to his underwear.

JOHN

Oh, I've been up in the hayloft a

few times. I just don't like making

assumptions.

FRENCHY

Look, I'm not some delicate virgin

you have to protect...I haven't been

since I was sixteen years old...

John climbs into bed beside her.

FRENCHY

...I've had lovers since...and I

spent a good part of the war gleaning

information from pillowtalk...

JOHN

I think I get the picture...

He slides an arm around her, and gently pulls her to him.

FRENCHY

I thought you didn't like making

assumptions...

JOHN

I don't...but that kiss outside made

me curious...and I just can't sleep

when I'm curious...

He kisses her.

FRENCHY

Me neither.

31.

They kiss again. Frenchy sinks onto the matress, pulling him on

top of her. They go at it hot and heavy for a few moments, when

there is a knock at the door.

BEN (o.s.)

Colonel...it's me...

JOHN

It's my Sergeant...I'd better see

what he wants.

John gets out of bed, goes to the door and opens it. Ben

enters.

BEN

Colonel, you remember those bothersome

feelin's I was havin'...?

Ben notices Frenchy, and tips his hat to her.

BEN

Ma'am...

JOHN

Sergeant...Frenchy Le Clerc...Frenchy,

Sergeant Ben McShane...

Ben looks at Frenchy nervously.

BEN

Pardon me...but could I see your

teeth?

JOHN

Her teeth?

FRENCHY

It's alright.

She grimaces at Ben.

FRENCHY

How's this?

BEN

They're fine...

He turns back to John.

BEN

Anyhoo...while you two was palaverin'

with the high muck-mucks I was headin'

for the saloon, hopin' to find a

bottle and a friend...

32.

John smiles apologetically at Frenchy.

JOHN

Sorry, Frenchy...but the Sergeant

here tends to take the scenic route

when making a report.

BEN

And I always make it worth the trip...

(a beat)

While I was goin' to the saloon, I

met a gal named Lupe.

FRENCHY

Lupe...tall, willowy...?

BEN

The very gal...anyhoo she invited

me to dinner...only dinner turned

out to be me!

Joh gives Ben a confused look.

JOHN

Excuse me?

BEN

It turned out that she was a skinwalker...

that's Indian for someone who can...

JOHN

I've heard the term...

Frenchy gets out of bed.

FRENCHY

Just what did she turn into?

BEN

A jaguar...welll, almost...I burned

her before she could finish the job...

or bite me!

(a beat)

Grandma McShane always usta say that

witch folk can't take fire nor silver.

FRENCHY

That's true enough...

John gestures for silence.

JOHN

Would you two slow down and give me

a chance to catch up?

33.

FRENCHY

How much did Buchanan tell you about

the Ithacan Foundation when he recruited

you?

JOHN

He told me that it's a private group

that battles Evil...in the form of

a organization called the Fraterni

Arcanum...the Arcane Brotherhood...

Frenchy takes John by the hand.

FRENCHY

And did he tell you that the Brotherhood

practices what some people call black

magic?

JOHN

Yeah...although I'll be damned if

I'm sure what that means.

John sits down.

JOHN

Just over a year ago...my biggest

concern was keeping my regiment alive.

Now I'm in some sort of outlaw's paradise

talking about black magic, skinwalkers...

and Lord knows what else.

FRENCHY

I suppose it was easier with me...

growing up in N'Orleans...and learning

about such things from childhood...

but I don't have the time to initiate

you into it right now.

She turns toward Ben.

FRENCHY

What did you do with Lupe's body?

BEN

Left it...I got dressed and lit a

shuck outta there...accordin' to

Grandma McShane witch folk can feel

it when one of 'em dies...

INT. LUPE'S HUT

A group of half human JAGUAR WOMEN, led by INEZ, the fiercest

amongst them, are gathered around Lupe's body.

34.

INEZ

Get the scent, sisters...

They go sniffing around the jacal.

INEZ

We must track this man down and feast

upon...

BARONESS (o.s.)

No!

The Jaguar Woman turn to see the Baroness standing at the

doorway.

INEZ

But Lupe has been killed!

BARONESS

I can see that...

The Baroness goes to the body and looks it over.

BARONESS

She was warned against hunting without

permission...and she paid the price.

INEZ

But her death...it speaks of knowledge.

BARONESS

True...and whoever killed her could

use that knowledge on you...and one

of you is already dead.

She faces the women.

BARONESS

First...return to your human forms...

The Jaguar Women morph back to their human features.

BARONESS

Second, fetch Luisa, and bring her

to me. She will take Lupe's place.

After that...return to your quarters,

and prepare for your mates' return...

INEZ

And what of the one who killed Lupe?

BARONESS

I will find him, and I will kill

him.

35.

The Jaguar Women exit. The Baroness examines Lupe's charred

corpse.

EXT. SANCTUARY

People are gathering in the main square, setting up tables for

the sale of liquor, food, and other sundries. John, Ben, and

Gonzales come in and find Donovan directing the activities, with

Descartes and Saxon at his side.

JOHN

What's going on?

DONOVAN

That special project I told you about.

Shots sound in the distance.

DONOVAN

Ahhh...speak of the devil...

A company of Yaquis ride in, led by the young, yet regal, chief

ALEJANDRO, and his personal guard of Jaguar Knights. He rides

over to Donovan.

ALEJANDRO

Hola, Senor Donovan...

DONOVAN

And a top of the mornin' to you too,

Alejandro...

He gestures to John.

DONOVAN

Allow me to introduce Colonel John

Kenyon...formerly of the Confederate

Army...

Alejandro dismounts.

ALEJANDRO

The one the Comanches call "Grey

Wolf?"

JOHN

Been called that.

Donovan gestures to Alejandro.

DONOVAN

This is Alejandro...prince of the

Yaqui nation.

36.

John and Alejandro shake hands.

DONOVAN

Now that the introductions are over...

let's move this conversation outta

this hot sun.

ALEJANDRO

One moment...

He turns to the Jaguar Knights, and gives them orders in Yaqui.

The Knights dismount and join the other Yaquis, who are

patronizing the tables.

ALEJANDRO

Now I can go...

The small party heads off.

INT. OFFICE

Donovan takes the men into his office. Alejandro drops his

"noble savage" demeanor and sits down on a plush settee.

ALEJANDRO

Ahhh...after weeks of hard ground

and the backs of boney horses this

is heaven.

Dononvan goes to the liquor cabinet.

DONOVAN

Sherry, right?

ALEJANDRO

Please...

Donovan pours the drink and takes it to Alejandro. Alejandro

takes a sip, and sighs.

ALEJANDRO

Nectar of the gods...another week

of pulque, and I would have screamed.

JOHN

You seem to have picked up a taste

for the finer things.

ALEJANDRO

I was educated by the Jesuits...I

did well enough to earn a place at

the Sorbonne in Paris. There I studied

history, literature...

37.

He takes another sip.

ALEJANDRO

...And can-can dancers.

JOHN

Well...travel does broaden one.

Donovan passes out drinks to the others.

DONOVAN

Enough of that...did you do your part?

ALEJANDRO

Yes...five chiefs of the Yaqui nation

will be here by tonight, each with

10 of their warriors as witnesses.

JOHN

Witnesses to what?

Donovan pours himself a drink.

DONOVAN

You might say we're holdin' a bit

of a revival...givin' 'em a taste

of that "Old Time Religion."

ALEJANDRO

In this case...the "Old Time Religion"

refers to the gods of my Aztec and

Toltec ancestors. In particular,

Tezcatlipoca...

Alejandro takes another sip.

ALEJANDRO

A dark and sanguine diety...warrior

and sorceror...a stalker of the night...

JOHN

And by sanguine, I assume you mean

one with a taste for human blood?

ALEJANDRO

Most of the ancient gods of Mexico

required blood sacrifice, Colonel.

Saxon gags on his drink.

SAXON

Are we talkin'about what I think

we're talkin' about?

38.

ALEJANDRO

Gettin' squeamish, Mr. Saxon?

SAXON

I ain't no angel...and I've done

my share of killin'...but always

in straight up fights.

He heads for the door.

SAXON

But holdin' someone down while some

heathen devil-priest cuts their throat...

that's somethin' else.

DONOVAN

Where are you goin', Saxon?

SAXON

I'm gettin' my men, and pullin' out.

Donovan pulls out a derringer and points it at Donovan.

DONOVAN

Like hell you are!

SAXON

I always figgered you for a back

shooter, Bass...too bad it had to

end like...

John takes out a pistol, and knocks Saxon out. Donovan gives John a frosty glare.

DONOVAN

I don't recall askin' for your help,

Colonel.

JOHN

A good officer knows how to improvise

in the field.

(a beat)

I figured that he was more valuable

to you alive...certainly his men will

think so.

Donovan puts his derringer back with a grin.

DONOVAN

Well when you put it that way...

thank you, Colonel. You saved me

from a rash act of temper.

Alejandro looks at John pointedly.

39.

ALEJANDRO

We still haven't heard your opinions

on blood sacrifice, Colonel

JOHN

Hell, Preacher...go and part the

Red Sea for all I care...just as

long as I get paid.

ALEJANDRO

Really?

John gives Alejandro a cold look.

JOHN

I just spent 4 years having my ideals

blown to bloody hell...and I get

tired of sitting on the hard ground

too.

DONOVAN

Now that's been settled...there's

somethin' I want to show all of you.

INT. STOREHOUSE

Donovan opens a crate full of new Winchester rifles. He takes

one out and hands it to Alejandro.

DONOVAN

This is the Winchester Model 1866...

it holds 17 rounds in the magazine

plus one in the chamber...loads from

the breech instead of the...

ALEJANDRO

How many?

DONOVAN

Two hundred...enough to outfit your

men...

Alejandro looks the rifle over.

ALEJANDRO

What kind of ammunition does it

take?

DONOVAN

.44-28's...just like the Henry...

and we've got plenty of those...

He takes the men to another crate.

40.

DONOVAN

And now...the piece d'resistance...

He opens the crate, it contains sticks of dynamite.

ALEJANDRO

And this is?

DONOVAN

The latest thing in explosives...

dynamite...

ALEJANDRO

Never heard of it.

Donovan takes a stick out.

DONOVAN

It's so new, they haven't even begun

marketin' it yet.

He twirls the stick, grinning at the nervous reaction this induces from the others.

DONOVAN

And it's the most stable explosive

ever made. You can drop it, kick

it, shoot it, even set fire to it,

and it won't explode until you want

it to...

JOHN

What kind of whallop does it pack?

DONOVAN

About halfway between black powder

and nitro.

Descartes looks over the dynamite with contempt.

DESCARTES

And what do we do with it...throw

these little sticks at the enemy like

grenades?

John takes a stick out.

JOHN

I wouldn't be so quick to sneer,

General...my regiment could have

done a lot of damage with these in

their saddlebags.

He hands the stick to Ben.

41.

JOHN

What do you think, Sergeant?

BEN

I dunno...I'd like to see this stuff

in action before I pass judgement...

maybe if we had the regiment with

us...

DONOVAN

Which brings me to me next point...

(a beat)

Colonel, I want you to take command

of Alejandro's Yaquis. I figure

a first class cavalry commander like

you oughtta do quite well with 'em.

Descartes turns toward Donovan.

DESCARTES

Don't be ridiculous, Monsieur Donovan...

this man is more of a bandit than

a soldier...

DONOVAN

Andre...you do realize that he's a

West Point graduate?

DESCARTES

Bah...so he went to glorified boarding

school, and fought in a second class

riot that his fellow peasants dignified

with the name "Civil War..."

Descartes puffs himself up.

DESCARTES

My family has been producing soldiers

of France for 10 generations...my

grandfather served under Napoleon

from Marengo to Waterloo...

JOHN

Yeah...and we all know how well that

turned out. don't we?

Descartes screams, and pulls at his saber. John draws a gun and

stops Descartes with the blade half out.

JOHN

Scabberd it!

Descartes stands there trembling with rage.

42.

JOHN

Scabberd it now!

Descartes sheaths the saber.

DONOVAN

Andre, quit actin' like you were

runnin' for bloody May Queen...this

is serious business.

Descartes runs out of the room.

GONZALES

Time for Mamman to kiss away his

tears.

DONOVAN

Alright, he's a bloody prima donna...

and a pain in the ass besides...but

he knows his business...and we need

him...

He turns to John.

DONOVAN

You gotta problem with that, Colonel?

JOHN

He's the one with the problem.

He heads for the door.

JOHN

If we're finished here...I need a

drink...

He looks at Ben,

JOHN

Sergeant...

BEN

Yo!

They exit.

INT. SALOON

Frenchy is dealing poker at her table. Jake comes swaggering

in.

JAKE

Deal me in, bitch...

43.

FRENCHY

No...

JAKE

My money was good enough for you...

yesterday.

(a beat)

And I want to try you without that

high and mighty Reb around to back

you up.

John enters.

JOHN

Prepare for disappointment, Jake.

JAKE

Wellll...if it ain't the rightous

son of a bitch himself.

Jake pats the butt of his gun. Patrons start scrambling for

cover.

JAKE

Right here, right now...

JOHN

Jake...you've already established

that you're an idiot...don't make

it official.

JAKE

I ain't scared of you...

He grabs for his gun. John draw is faster, and Jake goes down

with a bullet in his chest. On the floor, he makes one last try

for his gun. John finishes him with a shot between the eyes.

JOHN

Maybe you should have been.

Ben and Gonzales come in with guns drawn.

BEN

You alright, Colonel?

JOHN

Yeah, I'm fine...

John turns to Frenchy, who's once more returning her derringer

to her ankle holster.

JOHN

That seems to be becoming a habit.

44.

FRENCHY

Just so you know...I didn't need

my big strong man to protect me.

I could've handled him.

Donovan and Descartes come in.

DONOVAN

And what was that shootin' about?

He sees Jake's body.

DONOVAN

Oh...

He gives John a dirty look.

DONOVAN

Didja hafta kill him?

JOHN

Well, he did try to kill me...twice.

DONOVAN

Alright, alright...considerin' that

he didn't have any friends or family

to raise a fuss...I'll call this

matter closed.

Descartes looks at Jake's body, and turns to Donovan with a

smile.

DESCARTES

But, Monsieur Donovan...I was this

man's friend.

DONOVAN

What!?!

DESCARTES

This man was my friend...and I demand

justice...in the circle!

DONOVAN

Dammit, Andre! I need the both of

you...

Gonzales steps forward.

GONZALES

It's going to happen, Senor...might

as well let it.

Donovan glowers at Descartes, then at John.

45.

DONOVAN

Alright...tomorrow mornin'...

Descartes exits.

JOHN

What's the circle?

DONOVAN

It's our form of duelin'...it's how

you're supposedta settle disputes

around here.

JOHN

Nobody told me.

DONOVAN

Well, you didn't bloody well ask,

didja?

Donovan turns to leave, Gonzales stops him.

GONZALES

If you wanted to to be surrounded

by hearty good fellowship, you should

chosen another way of life.

Donovan grunts, and heads for the door.

DONAVAN

Somebody get that stiff outta here!

He exits. Two Bouncers pick up Jake's body and carry it

outside.

GONZALES

Don't worry, my friend, he's angrier

at Descartes than he is with you.

In fact, you'll probably get promoted

once you kill Descartes.

JOHN

If I kill him.

GONZALES

Oh, you will kill him...I have faith

in you.

He moves closer to John.

GONZALES

But that is for tomorrow, my friend...

for now we must prepare for tonight.

46.

FRENCHY

What's tonight?

JOHN

Alejandro's putting on a show for

some Yaqui chiefs...

GONZALES

I would suggest leaving the girl

at home...it won't be a suitable

entertainment for young ladies.

Frenchy rises angerily.

FRENCHY

The "girl" is right here...so there's

no reason to use the third person...

and she's perfectly capable of deciding

for herself what's suitable.

Gonzales looks at Frenchy, and chuckles

GONZALES

She has a fiesty temper, my friend...

(a beat)

She will bear you bold sons.

FRENCHY

And just what is that crack supposed

to mean?

JOHN

Ignore it...we have a lot to get

ready for...

EXT. SANCTUARY-NIGHT

A stage has been set up in the courtyard. On it is a pair of

stone altars, and a burning brazier. A crowd gathers in front

of it, including John, Frenchy, Ben, and Gonzales.

BEN

(singing)

Bringin' in the sheaves...bringin'

in the sheaves...Here we come rejoicin',

bringin' in the...

FRENCHY

Shhh...the show's starting...

The Shaman and priests come on stage. Near the stage, DRUMMERS

strike up a beat, and the priests dance to it.

47.

JOHN

So far...I've seen saloon shows that

were better. How does it stand on

the ritual side of things?

FRENCHY

Well, I suspect they're skimping

on the details, and making up their

own frills and dressing.

She looks over at the YAQUI CHIEFS, and their entourages.

FRENCHY

Our Yaqui guests aren't happy...

BEN

They're feeilin' the bad medicine...

hell, I'm only half Indian, and I

can feel it.

The Jaguar Knights come on stage with two prisoners, a MEXICAN

SOLDIER and a FRENCH SOLDIER.

GONZALES

Well...they're not playing favorites...

you got to give them that.

The shaman goes to the prisoners and swats them with a turkey

feather fan.

BEN

I take it they're a mite dusty.

The Baroness and her Jaguar Women come on stage in priestess

costumes. They join the priests in their dance.

JOHN

Well, Alejandro said he liked can-can

dancers

Alejandro comes strutting onstage, wearing the regalia of an

Aztec emperor. He silences the drums with a gesture, and faces

the crowd.

ALEJANDRO

You know me!

An excited murmur goes through the crowd.

ALEJANDRO

I am Spirit Jaguar...son of Eagle

Snake...some of you may know of me

as Alejandro...the name given to

me by the Jesuits...

48.

He sweeps the crowd with his gaze.

ALEJANDRO

They named me that as a joke...because

I was proud...so they named me after

a king...a conquerer...

He gestures toward himself.

ALEJANDRO

I...the son of a chief...of a long

line of chiefs...with the blood of

Moctezuma flowing through my veins,

received a name out of mockery

because I was proud of that blood...

He crosses his arms and smiles.

ALEJANDRO

Well, the joke is on them...for when

I went to Europe, I studied campaigns

of Alexander...I learned how he took

a small, divided nation...and made

her Queen of the World...and became

a god!

He stretches his arms out to the crowd.

ALEJANDRO

I also read about the history of

our ancestors, the Aztecs and the

Toltecs...how they too worshipped

living gods...

Gonzales grins at John.

GONZALES

Here it comes...

ALEJANDRO

I returned to my native land and

sought out the ancient, forgotten

places...and I prayed to the old

gods of our people...

Alejandro pauses for several beats

ALEJANDRO

AND I WAS ANSWERED!!!

(a beat)

Tezcatlipoca...Smoking Mirror...the

dark trickster...came to me...and

imbued with his essence...and it

is he who speaks before you tonight!

49.

Alejandro steps aside to give the audience a good view of the

Baroness.

ALEJANDRO

Let the Old Magic come alive as it

once did...

The drums start up again, and the Jaguar knights strap the

prisoners to the altars. The Shaman hands the Baroness the

obsidian knife.

ALEJANDRO

...With blood and fire!

The Baroness waves her hands over the prostrate Prisoners, and

chants. She holds the knife over the Mexican Prisoner.

BEN

Damn...she's really gonna do it.

John fingers the butts of his pistols. However, Gonzales

restrains him.

GONZALES

No, my friend, we cannot save those

poor devils...we'd be torn to pieces...

The Baroness hammers her knife down on the screaming Mexican

Prisoner.

GONZALES

Madre de Dios...

Gonzales crosses himself.

JOHN

I once saw a whole column of infantry

wiped out with a single cannonball...

this is worse.

The Baroness shows the Mexican's heart to the crowd, and then

tosses it onto the brazier. Then she dances toward the French

Prisoner.

FRENCHY

I think I'm going to be sick...

BEN

Get in line.

The French Prisoner screams o.s.

BEN

Dammmn...

50.

The Baroness, covered with blood, dances up to the Jaguar

Knights, and annoints several of them with her dance. While

they morph into Jaguars, Alejandro retakes his postion at Front

Stage.

ALEJANDRO

The old magic lives again...the old

gods live again...and the empire

will live again...through me!

Gonzales turns to the others.

GONZALES

Come on...let's get the hell out

of here...

They exit.

INT. FRENCHY'S PLACE

They go into Frenchy's jacal. Gonzales goes to the table and

lights an oil lamp.

GONZALES

I don't know what's worse...the sacrifice,

or Alejandro's rantings. I swear...

to be a politician in any cause...

FRENCHY

Gonzales...you can stow the "Carefree

Bandido" act...it's getting old...

Gonzales looks at her.

GONZALES

Really?

FRENCHY

I've been a spy for five years...

I know the smell of another professional

by now.

Gonzales chuckles, and gives Frenchy a respectful bow.

GONZALES

Pardonez moi, Mademoiselle...

(a beat)

Allow me to introduce myself...Major

Ramon De La Vega...9th Rancheros...

JOHN

So...you're a Juarista...

51.

GONZALES

Yes...and you three are?

The three Americans hesitate.

JOHN

It's...a bit complicated...

GONZALES

I understand...

JOHN

What I want to know is...when is

Juarez coming to clean out this

snake pit?

Gonzales pulls out a cigarillo, and lights it with the oil lamp.

GONZALES

Not for some weeks, I'm afraid...

the war with the French is at a

crucial stage...

Gonazales blows out a cloud of smoke.

GONZALES

And even if he did come...what could

he do against people who can turn

into jaguars...

FRENCHY

There's a way to handle them.

She turns to Ben.

FRENCHY

Isn't there Sergeant McShane?

BEN

Silver and fire?

FRENCHY

Silver and fire...

She turns back to Gonzales.

FRENCHY

Can you collect a lot of silver crucifixes

in a short time?

GONZALES

Mademoiselle...this is Mexico...in

an hour I could have a pile of crosses

as tall as the Sergeant here.

52.

FRENCHY

And someone who can melt them down

and extract the pure silver?

GONZALES

In a den of thieves like this? I

could name a dozen.

Gonzales blows more smoke.

GONZALES

And what are we going to do with

all this silver...make little bells

for the kitties' collars so we can

hear them coming?

FRENCHY

No...we're going to make bullets...

Gonzales gives John a surprised look.

JOHN

Don't look at me...she's the expert.

FRENCHY

I assume there are also lots of bullet

molds in this "den of thieves?"

GONZALES

Of course...rifle or pistol?

FRENCHY

Both...

She thinks a moment.

FRENCHY

We'll also need a priest...to bless

the bullets, and consecrate holy

water to cool them down with.

GONZALES

I have a defrocked priest amongst

my men...his bishop suspended him

when he declared for Juarez...

(a beat)

He is still a most Godly man...and

"A priest is a priest forever...

unto the order of Melchizedak."

FRENCHY

Well that takes care of the silver...

we still need fire.

Ben steps forward.

53.

BEN

Colonel...you remember that new fangled

explosive...the one that Donovan's

so all fired proud of?

JOHN

You mean the dynamite?

BEN

The very stuff.

John looks at Frenchy.

FRENCHY

Well...explosives are a form of fire...

I guess...

GONZALES

It's a nice thought...but we have

to get our hands on some...and we

need more men...I have only 20 here

with me.

JOHN

How about Saxon and his men?

Gonzales puffs on his cigarillo, and thinks.

GONZALES

Saxon's a prisoner in his own quarters...

his Comancheros won't move while

that's going on...but if he's freed...

Gonzales puts his hat on.

GONZALES

I will think on it.

He heads for the door, pausing to give Frenchy another bow.

GONZALES

Adios, Little General...I will see

that your orders are carried out

to the letter.

He turns to John.

GONZALES

And you...don't forget you have a

duel in the morning.

JOHN

How could I forget?

54.

Gonzales laughs, and exits.

EXT. SANCTUARY-DAY

John, Ben, and Frenchy come out to the square. Descartes is

already there, stripped to the waist, and practicing a drill

with his saber. Frenchy watches him.

FRENCHY

Merde...he is good...

John looks at her.

FRENCHY

My godfather was the greatest fencing

master in N'Orleans. I know a

good swordsman when I see one.

Descartes goes through another manuver.

FRENCHY

He's slow on the riposte though...

and he tends to shift his weight

to the right in secunde...he's beatable.

Gonzales comes over.

GONZALES

Hola, my friend...I've been checking

the odds. So far...Decartes is favored

two to one...but that's only because

he's a known quantity.

FRENCHY

Two to one, eh...I want some of that

action.

John gives her a dirty look.

FRENCHY

I'm a gambler...so sue me...

John turns to Gonzales

JOHN

You mind telling me the rules?

GONZALES

They're very simple...the crowd forms

a circle about ten feet in diameter...

and you two fight in that...stripped

to the waist, and any weapon you

want...as long as it's hand to hand.

55.

Donovan comes out with the Baroness. He takes out a white

handkerchief, and gestures to the crowd.

DONOVAN

Form the circle!

The men in the crowd form themselves into a circle.

GONZALES

Take off your guns and remove your

upper clothing.

John complies. Ben takes his gunbelt and uniform jacket.

GONZALES

What kind of weapon do you want?

JOHN

I'll take a saber.

DESCARTES

You sure, Monsieur? Perhaps a club

would be more approbriate weapon for

you?

Frenchy launches a tirade of Gallic invective at Descartes. He

whitens in anger.

BEN

What did she just call him?

JOHN

Believe me, you don't want to know.

Gonzales takes a saber from one of his men, and hands it to

John.

JOHN

I'm ready.

Frenchy kisses him.

FRENCHY

For luck...mon chevalier...now go

out and kill that son of a bitch.

Donovan steps into the center of the circle.

DONOVAN

I just want to remind everybody about

the rules...

(a beat)

There ain't any!

56.

They crowd howls in laughter.

DONOVAN

As long as neither of you brought

a gun, you can do whatever you want...

and only one of you walks out of

here alive!

He holds the handkerchief up.

DONOVAN

When this hits the ground, go at

it.

GONZALES

One last thing...don't fall into

the crowd, they will beat the hell

out of you.

JOHN

Oh, thanks...

Donovan drops the handkerchief, and runs into the crowd. The

two combatants advance slowly toward each other.

DESCARTES

I promise to make this as quick and

painless as I can.

JOHN

Just watch out for yourself.

Descartes opens up with an aggressive attack that, drives John

back, but John quickly recovers, and launches a counter-attack

that surprises Descartes.

DESCARTES

You are better than I thought you'd

be. I thought you Americans were

all so in love with your guns that

a gentleman's weapon was beyond you.

JOHN

And what would you know about being

a gentlemen?

Descartes launches another attack.

DESCARTES

You do have a crude skill...but you

lack subtlety...the thrust is much

more effective...than the slash...

observe...

57.

He thrusts at John who barely dodges.

DESCARTES

The true master of the blade only

uses the edge to make to small cuts...

He slashes John's arm, slightly.

DESCARTES

Causing his opponent small wounds

that slowly weaken him through loss

of blood.

He cuts John on the chest.

DESCARTES

Thus slowing his reflexes...leaving

him open to a...

Descartes lunges, but John is ready for him, and he ends up

spitted on John's saber. For a moment he stands there looking

incredulously at the sword sticking out of his gut.

JOHN

Here endeth the lesson.

John pulls his saber from Descartes. Descartes falls slowly to

the ground. Donovan comes back into the circle.

DONOVAN

Congratulations...you've just been

promoted. You're now Commander-in-

bloody-Chief of all of Sanctuary's

forces.

JOHN

Oh...does a raise come with it?

The Baroness walks over to them.

BARONESS

Monetary compensation can be arranged...

She touches the blood oozing from his chest.

BARONESS

And perhaps a nice...bonus...as well.

She slowly licks the blood from her fingers, to Donovan's

annoyance.

DONOVAN

Get a shirt on, before that sun rips

the skin offa you.

58.

He walks off. John looks around, and sees Frenchy, and Ben

collecting money from the crowd. He goes over to them. Frenchy

greets him with a hug and kiss.

FRENCHY

It seems that you are my good luck

charm...look.

She shows him the money. He takes part of it.

JOHN

I do the bleeding...I get half.

She kisses him again. Ben hands him his gunbelt, and uniform

jacket. While he puts them back on, Gonzales comes up and gives

him a mock salute.

GONZALES

Congratulations, Colonel...I hope

all of your victories are as satisfying.

(a beat)

I noticed her Excellency also admired

your performance.

JOHN

So?

BEN

Hell, Colonel...all you hadda do

was cock an eyebrow, and she woulda

ripped your pants off, and taken

you in fronta the entire crowd.

John buttons his jacket.

JOHN

Too bad for the Baroness...because

I wouldn't have her if I found her

naked in my bed on Christmas Day.

GONZALES

Let's take this someplace a bit more

private.

They go to an alleyway between two jacals.

GONZALES

You may want to reconsider taking

her Excellency up on her none too

subtle offer.

JOHN

Ramon...she's a bloodthirsty bitch.

59.

GONZALES

Maybe...but you saw Donovan's reaction

when she came on to you. That's

dissension in the enemy's highest

ranks...and we must cultivate it.

Frenchy touches John's shoulder.

FRENCHY

John...he's right...

JOHN

You realize what you're asking?

FRENCHY

I told you that I used to glean information

out of pillow talk...sometimes that

meant sleeping with men who made

my skin crawl.

She shudders slightly.

FRENCHY

I took a lot of baths during that

time.

John lifts her face to his.

JOHN

You did what you had to do...just

like us soldiers in the field...

He tries to kiss her, but she sees people watching them, and

gives him a slap.

JOHN

Heyyy!

FRENCHY

Macroix...you dare try to kiss me

after flirting with that teutonic

cow!

The spectators scurry off. Gonzales goes and looks around the

corner.

GONZALES

It's alright...you've frightened

them off.

JOHN

She damned near frightened me off.

Frenchy turns to Gonzales.

60.

FRENCHY

How are things progressing on the

silver cross front?

GONZALES

Well enough...my men collected a

fair amount last night. They are

being melted down as we speak.

JOHN

That's all well and good...but that

still leaves getting our hands on

the dynamite...

Gonzales claps John on the shoulder.

GONZALES

As the new Commander in Chief, you

can order some at your leisure...

JOHN

See to it...

(to Ben)

Go with him, Sergeant...I want you

to learn as much as you can about

it.

Ben salutes John.

BEN

Yo!

Ben and Gonzales exit. Frenchy grabs John by the arm.

FRENCHY

You're coming with me...

JOHN

Why?

She flashes him a grin.

FRENCHY

You need a crash course in seducing

the enemy before tonight.

JOHN

What's to...

(a beat)

Ohhhh...good thing I'm a fast learner.

FRENCHY

Not too fast I hope...

61.

INT. FRENCHY'S PLACE-NIGHT

Frenchy helps John arrange his dress uniform.

JOHN

I feel naked without my guns.

FRENCHY

One does not attend a rendevous armed...

even if it is with the Bitch Queen

of the Black Forest.

Ben and Gonzales enter. They both restrain chuckles when they

see John.

GONZALES

Aiyee! All you lack is a rose for

your teeth, my friend.

JOHN

You know...about a year ago I had

General Sherman's army hunting for

me...I miss that now.

Gonzales claps John on the shoulder.

GONZALES

I don't blame you, my friend...I've

been chased by an army or two in

my time. It was an exhilirating

experiance.

Frenchy hands John his hat.

FRENCHY

No time for boy talk...there's an

eager Frau Venus waiting for her

Tannhauser, remember?

John puts his hat on. Frenchy adjusts it.

FRENCHY

There's a good piece of advice Rose

Greenhow gave me the first time I

did this..."Close your eyes, think

of pleasant things, and remember

what you came there for..."

JOHN

Uh huh...and just what is that, praytell?

FRENCHY

Just go...

62.

She shoves him toward the door.

FRENCHY

And don't you dare enjoy it.

JOHN

I won't...believe me.

He exits.

EXT. SANCTUARY

John walks across the compound, until he reaches the Baroness'

quarters. He knocks on the door, and it is opened by the

Shaman, now wearing a butler's livery.

JOHN

Her Excellency is expecting me.

SHAMAN

Follow me, Senor.

John goes inside.

INT. BARONESS' HOUSE

The Shaman takes John to the center of the room.

SHAMAN

Wait here...

He exits up a set of stairs. John looks around the room, which

is decorated with occult themed art, much of it pornographic.

He notices a statue of the Devil in a corner. His eyes pause at

the statue's crotch, and he grins mockingly.

JOHN

You wish...

The Shaman returns,

SHAMAN

Her Excellency will see you now...

He takes John up the stairs to a door, and knocks. The Baroness

opens it, and faces the Shaman.

BARONESS

You may leave now...I shall ring if

we require anything...

(a beat)

Which won't be likely...

63.

The Shaman bows.

SHAMAN

Si, your Excellency.

He exits. The Baroness takes John by the arm.

BARONESS

Come with me, Colonel.

She takes John into the...

BEDROOM

...And sits him down on the bed. She gildes over to a table set

with cavier and toast.

BARONESS

Have you ever had cavier, Colonel?

JOHN

No...

The Baroness spreads some cavier on a piece of toast, and takes

it to John.

BARONESS

Try some.

John takes the cavier, and samples it.

JOHN

A mite salty.

BARONESS

And that is is why there is champagne.

She moves to an ice bucket that holds a magnum of champagne.

She takes the bottle and works the cork slowly and sensually.

BARONESS

Too many people think you should

just let it explode...spilling good

champagne all over the floor...I

believe in saving it for the glass...

JOHN

Well, drinking it out of the glass

is easier, so I hear.

The cork pops, and the Baroness pours two glasses. She brings

the glasses over to the bed, and sits beside John. She hands

him one.

64.

BARONESS

To new opportunties.

She clinks her glass against his.

JOHN

Confusion to the enemy.

The Baroness intertwines her arm with his, and they drink. They

pull their arms apart, and the Baroness places their glasses on

the nightstand.

BARONESS

Colonel...have you given some thought

to your future...I mean after we

have conquered Mexico?

JOHN

Not much...I quess stay on as a general

in the new regime...or go back to

Texas.

She slides an arm around his neck.

BARONESS

And what waits for you back in Texas?

JOHN

My family has 20,000 acres northwest

of San Antonio. I'm kind of hoping

what I make here will help them keep

it safe from carpetbaggers and such.

The Baroness snuggles closer to him.

BARONESS

And what if I were to tell you that

you could aspire to much more than

that...

JOHN

I'd say..."Ma'am, I hope you ain't

pullin' some fancy city girl trick

on this ol' country boy."

The Baroness laughs.

BARONESS

You are very good at this game, Colonel.

(a beat)

I represent a group that is commited

to a new order...one world, one empire...

ruled by the elite, the select...

65.

JOHN

Really?

BARONESS

Yes...and none of this nonsense of

begging the peasants for a few years

in power either. The rulers would

rule!

The Baroness kisses him repeatedly.

BARONESS

And you could be a part of that...

with wealth...and power...beyond

your wildest dreams.

JOHN

And what about Donovan?

BARONESS

He is merely an investment...he

would be merely be running a bolt

hole for outlaws if not for us.

Her kisses grow more intense.

JOHN

And Alje...?

She places a finger on his lips.

BARONESS

Shhh...they'll be time enough for

questions later...

She pulls him down upon the bed.

BARONESS

...In the morning.

INT. SHACK-NIGHT

Frenchy, Gonzales, and JUAN, a nervous little man, watch as an

elderly SILVERSMITH takes molten silver from a melting pot, and

pours it into a bullet mold. Ben loads his revolvers with

already forged silver bullets.

FRENCHY

I see you like being prepared.

BEN

I reckon I live longer that way...

66.

Ben closes up his guns, and starts on a new pair.

SILVERSMITH

Padre...the new bullets are ready.

Juan comes forward.

JUAN

You shouldn't be calling me Padre...

GONZALES

Nonsense...being a priest is in the

heart, not the cloth.

Juan looks over the mileu dubiously.

JUAN

Perhaps...but I suspect the Church

would find blessing bullets highly

irregular...cloth or no...

GONZALES

A good priest can bless just about

anything.

The Silversmith places the bullets into a bucket of water. As

the steam rises Juan says a benediction over the bullets.

INTERCUT WITH:

EXT. SANCTUARY

Dononvan approaches the shack with a squad of Jaguar Knights and

Inez in tow.

INTERCUT WITH

INT. SHACK

The Silversmith places the cooled bullets on a pile of bullets.

FRENCHY

How many have you got so far?

SILVERSMITH

Over a hundred...rifle and pistol...

Donovan enters with Inez.

DONOVAN

What's all this then?

67.

GONZALES

Just showing the Mademoiselle some

of Senor Valdez's artistry.

DONOVAN

Like makin' silver bullets now?

Gonzalez steps forward.

GONZALES

Donovan...don't you have...

Inez points at Ben.

INEZ

He killed Lupe!

DONOVAN

You sure?

INEZ

I told you his scent was here...

Donovan faces the group.

DONOVAN

Alright...you're all comin' with

me...this place is surrounded.

Inez heads for Ben.

INEZ

I want his blood!

DONOVAN

No...I need 'em alive...

Inez screams, and transforms.

DONOVAN

Back off...BACK OFF!!!

Juan steps forward, drawing a cross in the air.

JUAN

In Nominae Deo, Retro Sat...

Inez mauls him to death. Ben picks up a gun and fires, and she

goes down. The Jaguar Knights come pouring into the room. Ben

opens fire on them.

DONOVAN

Dammit, I said I want 'em alive!

68.

FRENCHY

Ben get out of here!

Ben grabs more guns, and kicks open the back door. He exits

blasting his way through more Jaguar Knights.

INTERCUT WITH:

EXT. SANCTUARY

Ben shoots his way past the Jaguar Knights and disappears into

the darkness.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. SHACK

The Silversmith is killed by transformed Jaguar Knights. Two,

still human, Knights hold Frenchy and Gonzales fast. Donovan

goes over to them.

DONOVAN

You're lucky...once the killin' starts

they're hard to stop.

He gestures to the feeding were-jaguars.

DONOVAN

Too bad about him and the priest...

but they weren't important...

and we'll catch up with your big

friend soon enough.

He faces the Knights.

DONOVAN

Take 'em to the cellar.

The Knights haul the prisoners away.

INT. BEDROOM

John and the Baroness lie together in bed. She swings on top of

him, and pins his wrists to the mattress.

BARONESS

I like to be the dominant one, mein

schatz...is that a problem?

JOHN

No...whatever makes you happy, your

Excellency...

69.

She kisses him. There is a knock at the door. She tries to

ignore it, by the knocking grows louder.

BARONESS

Scheisse!

She gets out of bed. Grabbing her robe off the floor, she pulls

it on as she goes to the door. She opens the door to find

Donovan there, grinning at her, with two Jaguar Knights backing

him up.

BARONESS

Sebastian, you are a pig.

DONOVAN

You think so, darlin'...just wait

until you find out what you're fine

southern gentleman's been up to.

She looks at John, who's dressing.

BARONESS

What are you talking about?

DONOVAN

Earlier today I got wind that someone

was makin' bullets outta silver crosses...

and guess who it was...Gonzales and

the Creole girl.

The Baroness glowers at John. She goes over to him and gives

him a slap.

BARONESS

That's for thinking I was stupid.

JOHN

Inviting me up here was your idea,

your Excellency

She slaps him again, and faces Dononvan.

BARONESS

For your sake...Gonzales and the

girl had better still be alive.

DONOVAN

They're in the cellar...

(a beat)

It was a bad fight though...we lost

five Jaguar Knights, and Inez. And

that big hick of a sergeant got away.

We're still lookin' for him.

70.

The Baroness clenches her fists.

BARONESS

HE'S NEARLY TWO METERS TALL...HOW

HARD CAN HE BE TO FIND!!!

She takes a moment to calm down.

BARONESS

Take him to the cellar.

The Jaguar Knights go in, grab John, and haul him toward the

door. The Baroness gives him a passing sneer.

BARONESS

You should have chosen illumination,

liebchen.

The Knight's take John out of the room.

INT. CELLAR

Frenchy and Gonzales are chained to a wall. The Shaman is

heating irons in a brazier. The door opens and the Jaguar

Knights bring John in, followed by Donovan and the Baroness.

DONOVAN

Everything's ready for you, your

Excellency.

The Baroness goes to Gonzales, and examines the bruises on his

face.

BARONESS

I see that the Knights amused themselves

before I got here.

DONOVAN

He put up a fight...

(a beat)

The girl's still fresh as daisy for

you, though.

The Baroness goes to a table where tools for torture have been

arranged, including the melting pot, still full of molten

silver.

DONOVAN

I saved the silver...I assumed you'd

find a use for it.

The Baroness stirs the silver with a metal spoon.

71.

BARONESS

Thank you, Sebastian...it's just

right too...

(a beat)

As hot as brimstone from Hell!

Alejandro enters.

ALEJANDRO

Just so you know, your summons interrupted

a sifter of 50 year old Cognac.

FRENCHY

Ooo...you should've brought the bottle.

The Baroness walks over to Frenchy.

BARONESS

Very good, mon petit, I'm glad you

still have your wit...

She runs a finger down Frenchy's cheek.

BARONESS

I'm sure it'll make your screams

all the more amusing

JOHN

There's no need for that...I'll tell

you what you want to know.

BARONESS

Sorry, liebchen...but I've already

guessed that you're agents of the

Ithacan Foundation. This is punishment,

not interrogation.

JOHN

Then punish me, leave her out of

it.

The Baroness laughs evilly.

BARONESS

So heroic...too bad it's a wasted

effort.

She faces Frenchy.

BARONESS

You really should learn to control

your emotions, mon petite...you look

postively flushed.

73.

She strokes Frenchy's cheek again.

BARONESS

Fortunately, I have just the solution...

your face needs just a touch...of

silver.

Laughing she heads for the table. She stirs the silver until

she has a good sized glob at the end of her spoon. Then she

turns toward Frenchy.

BARONESS

Let's see how your Colonel's likes

it after you've been kissed with this!

INTERCUT WITH:

EXT. SANCTUARY

Two Jaguar Knights guard the door to the Baroness' house. Ben

sneaks up on the door. He pauses, draws his guns, and charges

the door with a rebel yell.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT CELLAR

The noise from outside distracts the Baroness. Frenchy kicks

the spoon out of the Baroness' hand, spewing silver in all

directions. One big globule hits the Baroness on the cheek,

and she screams.

BARONESS

Idioten! Haven't I told you to bind

their legs too?

She turns to one of the Jaguar knights and gives him a command

in Yaqui. He nods, and morphs.

BARONESS

This won't be as exquisitely painful

as I would have liked...but you will

suffer...I promise you.

John slugs his remaining guard, and runs for the table.

BARONESS

Stop him you fools!

John reaches the table, grabs the melting pot, and flings it's

contents onto the still morphing Jaguar Knights. The half

transformed creature screams, and falls to the floor twitching.

74.

BARONESS

KILLLL HIMMMM!!!

The Shaman grabs the two hot irons from the fire, while Donovan

tries to subdue John.

DONOVAN

You bastard!

John grabs Donovan by the arm and spins him around. With his

free hand, he pulls out Donovan's gun from its holster and sends

two shots into the advancing Chief Priest. After the Chief

Priest falls, John pushes Donovan away and confronts the group.

JOHN

I've got four bullets left in here...

He gestures to the Baroness

JOHN

You...get over here.

BARONESS

You wouldn't kill a woman...

JOHN

I wouldn't bet on that, your Excellency...

I stopped thinking of you as a woman

several miles back...

The Baroness complies. John takes her arm roughly and pulls her

to him.

JOHN

Alright, here are the rules...I tell

you what I want you to do...and if

you don't do it, I shoot the Baroness.

After that I don't care who's next...

understand?

Donovan, Alejandro, and the surviving Knight nod their heads.

JOHN

Good...now, unchain my friends.

Donovan pulls a key out of a pocket, goes over to Frenchy and

Gonzales, and unlocks their chains. Gonzales and Frenchy stand

for a minute rubbing their wrists.

JOHN

Chain two of them up in your place,

then find some rope and tie the last

one up.

75.

Frenchy and Gonzales chain Alejandro and Donovan to the wall.

Then they secure rope, bind the Jaguar Knight, and join John.

JOHN

At dawn you can get her back...at

the storehouse. Until then, if any

of you try anything, all you'll get

back is a corpse, understand?

DONOVAN

Yeah...

JOHN

See you at dawn, then.

John, Frenchy, and Gonzales exit, dragging the Baroness all the

way.

BARONESS' HOUSE

They come out of the cellar, and find Ben waiting for them.

JOHN

That was a timely intervention, Sergeant.

BEN

Por nada...

John turns to Gonzales.

JOHN

Go and get Saxon...then the both

of you collect as many of your men

you can, and meet us at the storehouse

before dawn.

GONZALES

As you wish, Colonel...and what is

your plan once the regiment is mustered?

JOHN

I'll let you know as soon as I have

one.

Gonzales laughs.

GONZALES

How did the South lose with you on

their side, my friend?

BEN

The Yanks had us outnumbered four

to one.

76.

GONZALES

I thought as much...

Gonzales exits.

BARONESS

You are all fools...

Frenchy slugs the Baroness into unconciousness.

JOHN

Well, I'm always going to remember

your birthday.

FRENCHY

It's February 10th...I was a Mardi

Gras baby.

INT. STOREHOUSE--NIGHT

The door to the warehouse opens, and the still groggy Baroness

is flung into the darkened room. John, Ben, and Frenchy, come

in close behind her. Frenchy gathers lamps while John closes

and bolts the door.

JOHN

Bring those lamps over here.

Frenchy does so. John takes one, strikes a match, and lights

one of the lamps.

BARONESS

Are you sure you want to do that?

There's a lot of black powder and

coal oil in here.

JOHN

I know...if your friends decide to

get stupid I can use this to blow

us all to kingdom come.

BARONESS

Very clever...too bad it won't do

you any good.

Frenchy goes over to the Baroness.

FRENCHY

Do you want to be knocked out again?

BARONESS

Go ahead...it'll take my mind off

my face.

77.

BEN

Well Ma'am...you did bring it on

yourself.

Frenchy distributes lit lamps throughout the room.

FRENCHY

Don't waste time on her. She's just

mad because she can't go "mirror,

mirror, on the wall," anymore.

BARONESS

Be careful what you quote from, mon

petite...I grew up on the original

versions of those stories...and they

weren't about fairy godmothers and

gingerbread houses...I assure you.

There is a furtive knock at the door. John and Ben ready their

guns.

JOHN

Who's there?

BARONESS

Der wind, der wind, der himmelische

kind.

GONZALES (o.s.)

It's me, Major De la Vega...with

Saxon...and friends.

John looks out the window, confirms who it is, and opens the

door. Gonzales and Saxon come in, followed by about 50 of their

men.

GONZALES

Better than a wooden horse, eh?

JOHN

Frenchy...issue everyone of these

men one of the new Winchesters and

ammunition to go with it.

Frenchy throws him a salute.

FRENCHY

Oui, mon colonel.

She goes into the back with some of the men. Saxon goes over to the Baroness.

SAXON

Not so pretty now, are ya?

78.

JOHN

Saxon...leave it be.

SAXON

This squarehead bitch made me eat

a lot of shit...I wanna see how she

likes it.

John advances to Saxon.

JOHN

I said, leave it be.

SAXON

Is that an order, Colonel?

JOHN

If that's the way you want to take

it.

Gonzales steps between them.

GONZALES

Gentlemen...let's not forget we're

on the same side.

SAXON

Just keep her out of my way.

Frenchy comes back, bearing Winchesters. John takes one and

checks it over loaded.

BEN

Well, at least, we'll face 'em comfortable.

GONZALES

We're better than comfortable...hey,

Swede! Come over here.

SWEDE, a stolid Scandanavian comes over.

GONZALES

Colonel, allow me to introduce Sven

Larson...or Swede as we call him...

formerly of the Nobel company.

John looks him over.,

JOHN

Let me guess, you came with the dynamite?

SWEDE

Ja...I'm de expert.

79.

JOHN

You sure you want to switch sides

like this?

Swede gives the Baroness a dirty look.

SWEDE

Nobody told me that I'd be helpin'

black vitchcraft ven dey hired me.

BARONESS

Oh, please...witchcraft is something

else entirely.

JOHN

Just ignore her...we've got a lot

to do before dawn.

EXT. SANCTUARY--DAWN

Donovan, Alejandro, and their forces are arrayed outside the

storehouse. Donovan strides up before it , and puts his

hands to his mouth like a megaphone.

DONOVAN

Hello, the storehouse!

The door opens, and John steps outside, bearing a Winchester.

JOHN

I assume you're here for the Baroness?

DONOVAN

Just send her out.

JOHN

Sure enough...

He goes back inside. A few moments later, the Baroness comes

out, and runs to Donovan. He looks her cheek over.

DONOVAN

It looks bad.

BARONESS

Of course it looks bad, you fool!

I was hit in the face with molten

metal.

Donovan takes the Baroness back to their lines.

DONOVAN

How many are in there?

80.

BARONESS

About fifty...all of Gonzales' men,

and most of Saxon's.

DONOVAN

Bloody hell...and they've got most

of the ammunition and the dynamite.

BARONESS

And the dynamite expert...Larson's

gone over to them.

They reach their lines. Alejandro steps forward.

DONOVAN

There's fifty of them in there...

includin' my dynamite expert.

ALEJANDRO

What of it...we have my Jaguar Knights...

and we have all the silver bullets.

BARONESS

They also have our supply of coal

oil...combined with dynamite that

should be very effective against our

shape shifters.

Alejandro looks nervously at the storehouse.

ALEJANDRO

So now what do we do?

DONOVAN

Well, a direct assault's out...that's

bloody obvious...

(a beat)

Surround the place, bottle 'em up.

BARONESS

Oh, that's brilliant.

DONOVAN

Look...they haven't got any food

or water, and after a few hours that

place is gonna be like an oven. If

we're patient, we can have this over

with before nightfall.

The Baroness glowers at Donovan.

BARONESS

PATIENT!?! Look at my face! Do

you think I want to be patient?

81.

DONOVAN

I've got more to worry about than

the fact you got your looks spoiled.

BARONESS

Have someone fetch my books...you

know the ones. I can have this over

with in less than an hour...

(a beat)

Then we will have fifty hearts to

feed the sacred flames.

INT. STOREHOUSE

John looks out the window at the proceedings outside. Gonzales,

Ben, and Saxon, are seeing to the deployment of the men at the

other windows.

GONZALES

What's going on?

JOHN

They're mostly talking...They'll

be surrounding this place soon. Try

to let heat and thirst do the work.

(a beat)

I hate being pinned down...never

had the patience for it...

SAXON

Hell, don't you Texas boys say "Remember

the Alamo?"

JOHN

I prefer to remember San Jaciento...

we won that one.

John grins at Gonzales.

JOHN

No offense, Major.

GONZALES

None taken...my father rebelled against

Santa Anna, too...the general just

had that effect on people.

John notices some movement going on outside, he looks out the window.

JOHN

Now, this is strange.

82.

GONZALES

What?

JOHN

They've sent somebody up to the main

house. And all those troops are

just staying in place. Donovan isn't

stupid...so he must have something

up his sleeve.

Frenchy comes over to the window.

FRENCHY

More likely the Baroness...fancy tricks

are her line. And I'll bet she sent

that man back to the house for her

grimoires.

JOHN

Her what?

FRENCHY

Her spell books. I get the feeling

she's going to want to conjure up

something extremely nasty.

Ben looks nervously out the window.

BEN

Nastier than Jaguar folk?

FRENCHY

Much nastier.

John looks around the storehouse.

JOHN

Major...is there a back door to this

place?

GONZALES

Sort of...

Gonzales points to the back.

GONZALES

The back wall was falling apart when

Donovan took over...he made some basic

repairs, but most of the adobe will

still crumble in your hand.

JOHN

Bueno...

83.

John draws a schematic on the wall with his finger.

JOHN

How fast can you make a hole in it

a man can crawl through without being

seen by our friends outside?

GONZALES

Ten, maybe twenty minutes. You finally

have a plan?

JOHN

Maybe...Can you take 30 men, and

sneak around behind them.

Gonzales grins.

GONZALES

In my sleep...

JOHN

Good...those of us who stay will

be giving them something to think

about...that should buy you some

cover.

He faces Frenchy.

JOHN

I want you to go with them. I need

you to take care of the Baroness,

and whatever...thing...she's going

to whistle up.

FRENCHY

All right...

She kisses him.

FRENCHY

But you'd better survive this, or

I'll never forgive you.

JOHN

Well, I wouldn't exactly think highly

of myself either.

He turns to Ben.

JOHN

I want you go with them too, Sergeant.

You seem to know something about

this magic business. And you're

the best man in an open fight I know.

84.

John walks over to where Swede is putting sticks of dynamite

into clay jars full of coal oil.

JOHN

How are those party favors coming

along?

SWEDE

You can have vun of dese a man for

dat raid you're plannin'.

He points at a jar.

SWEDE

Ven de dynamite goes off de coal

oil gets ignited.

JOHN

How big a spread?

SWEDE

Two meters...about six to eight feet.

John picks up a jar and feels its weight.

JOHN

What are you timing the fuses for?

SWEDE

About five seconds...

JOHN

That's cutting it close.

SWEDE

You gotta have 'em blow up ven dey

hit, or it's not gonna vork.

Gonzales comes over.

GONZALES

We'll have to be very close to throw

one of these things.

JOHN

Just remember to duck.

EXT. SANCTUARY--DAY

Two of the Jaguar Knights return from the main house. One is

carrying a collection of old, large books, and the other is

carrying a brazier. They take them to the Baroness. She

snatches up one of the books, and leafs through it.

85.

BARONESS

No, this one requires a virgin

sacrifice...this one will take all

day...

She leafs through more of the book.

BARONESS

Useless...useless...USELESS!!!

She throws it to the ground, and picks up another. She leafs

through the second book, comes to a certain page, and smiles.

BARONESS

Ahhh...perfect...

She faces Donovan.

BARONESS

I need at least 10 feet of open space.

DONOVAN

Okay...

She turns to the knights

BARONESS

Did one of you remember to bring my

chalk?

The Jaguar Knight with the brazier pulls out a large stick of

chalk from his pocket. The Baroness snatches it away. Alejandro

comes over as she draws a large circle on the ground.

ALEJANDRO

How long will this take? Some of

my people are beginning to grumble.

BARONESS

Less than an hour...and you shall

join me. After all, they should

see a god participate when a miracle

occurs.

ALEJANDRO

If you say so.

INT. STOREHOUSE

Near the back, John, Ben,and Gonzales, are putting the finishing

touches on a large hole in the warehouse wall. Meanwhile, Saxon

and Frenchy are watching events throught the front window.

86.

JOHN

Okay...we're finished ...what are

are they doing?

SAXON

Her hoity toitiness is drawin' a

big star with a circle around it

on the ground.

FRENCHY

It's called a pentagram...and it

means big trouble.

JOHN

Alright...let's get going.

A group of men, and Frenchy head for the hole. Swede issues

each of them a firebomb.

GONZALES

One at a time, head for the arroyo

behind the old mill, we will gather

there, and make for the stables...

that should bring us behind them.

The men go through the hole Frenchy pauses to give John a kiss.

JOHN

Stay alive...

FRENCHY

You too...

They hug desperately Gonzales puts a hand on John's shoulder.

GONZALES

Enough, you two...

Reluctantly, they pull apart. John looks at Gonzales.

JOHN

I know you have thirty men to watch

over...but...

Gonzales pats him on the shoulder.

GONZALES

I will bring her back to you, my

friend.

BEN

And you know I'll look out for her

too, Colonel.

87.

FRENCHY

Right and I'll be the proper heroine...

standing helplessly to one side while

the big strong men protect me.

John looks at Ben.

BEN

Don't look at me...you're the one

fallin' in love with her.

John sighs.

JOHN

Just get going.

They go through the hole. John goes back to the window, and

takes up his Winchester.

JOHN

Okay...let's make ourselves irritating.

SAXON

I'm good at that...or so I'm told.

They both point their rifles out their respective windows.

EXT. SANCTUARY--DAY

The Baroness is kneeling inside a large pentacle drawn a little

off to the side of the warehouse. Alejandro stands outside with

a drawn knife.

BARONESS

Do you understand what you're supposed

to do?

ALEJANDRO

Shouldn't there be a sacrifice? You've

told me that...

BARONESS

There will be blood aplenty for my

demon once I send it against those

in the warehouse. Are your Jaguar

Knights ready?

He looks over at the Jaguar Knights, who are trembling with

antipatipation.

ALEJANDRO

Yes...although I fail to see why they

will be needed.

88.

BARONESS

My demon won't be able to catch them

all...

(a beat)

Remember...I need to concentrate

totally on this spell...one moment

of divided attention...one word wrongly

placed or mispronounced and...well...

it wouldn't be pleasant.

The Baroness chants. Alejandro walks around the pentagram,

pausing at each of the star's five points to twirl his knife,

and chant. A Yaqui Chief cames up to Donovan.

YAQUI CHIEF

Why doesn't Tezcatlipoca wave his

hand, and make the walls crumble

around his enemies? And we have

noticed that he needs the white woman

to call upon the spirits.

DONOVAN

You're askin' the wrong person, I

just keep the place runnin'. I leave

the miracles up to...

A shot rings out from the warehouse. Donovan jerks to avoid the

bullet.

DONOVAN

BLOO-DY HELL!!!

More shots come out from the warehouse. There are numerous

richochets, and the men scatter for cover. The Yaqui Chief goes

off back to his people, shaking his head sarcastically.

DONOVAN

It's only harassment fire, y'idiots...

they haven't hit anybody! Now, get

back into position, and return fire!

A few of the men try to do exactly that, but the fire from the

warehouse turns deadly at this point, and some of Dononvan's men

go down.

DONOVAN

Sweet, bloody, Jesus!

He runs to a small ruined wall, and pulls out his revolver.

DONOVAN

Okay...somebody lay down some covering

fire on those windows! Muldoon! You

take some men, and swing around behind...

89.

The air shimmers above the Pentagram. A large, ethereal,

creature, takes form. Alejandro looks up at it, impressed.

ALEJANDRO

The old magic lives again.

A RIFLEMAN, intently watches the events in the main compound

while taking cover from the stable wall. A knife appears in his

back. He goes down. Gonzales, Ben, and Frenchy, advance along

the stable wall, they take a look at the still forming creature.

BEN

What the hell is that?

FRENCHY

Something from Hell...

Gonzales crosses himself.

GONZALES

Madre de Dios...

BEN

Fightin' jaguar folk was bad enough...

how do we stop something like that?

FRENCHY

Well, I can think of something...

Frenchy takes careful aim with her Winchester, and fires. The

Baroness grabs her shoulder. She looks up at the demon, now

freed from her control.

BARONESS

Ach, scheisse...

The creature lets loose a roar, then reaches out and claws one

of Donovan's men to death clawing him to rags. It turns its

attention to the rest of Donovan's men.

MULDOON

JESUS!!!

The outlaws fire at it, but to no avail, as the creature wades

into them. The Baroness runs for cover. Frenchy, Ben, and

Gonzales watch the massacre.

GONZALES

Now what do we do?

FRENCHY

Stay hidden...that demon will soon

get tired of wrecking general havoc,

and go back to where it came from.

90.

Ben looks nervously at the demon.

BEN

You sure about that?

FRENCHY

Demons don't find our plane very

comfortable...and the Baroness didn't

have time to invoke the spells to

alleviate that.

BEN

Ohhh...

INT. WAREHOUSE--DAY

John, Saxon, and their men watch the creature inflict harm on

Donovan's forces.

SAXON

I dunno what that critter is...but

I'm proud to call him a gentleman.

EXT. SANCTUARY--DAY

Alejandro runs over to his Jaguar Knights, barking orders in

Yaqui. They morph into their jaguar forms. From her cover, the

hidden Baroness desperately trys to get his attention.

BARONESS

Alejandro...no! The Knights can't...

The Knights charge the demon, and many are mauled.

BARONESS

Why do I bother? They never listen.

She exits quickly. The creature continues battling the Jaguar

Knights but with less vigor than before.

FRENCHY

It's weakening...let's go...

Gonzales pauses to light a cigarillo.

GONZALES

Oui, Mon General...

He gestures to the men, and the party goes out. The compound

becomes wracked by bullets and exploding fire bombs. Gonzales

lights his bomb with his cigarillo and flings it into the

surviving Jaguar Knights.

91.

GONZALES

Here, puss-puss...

The bomb explodes, incinerating the knights.

GONZALES

I've always preferred dogs anyway.

Ben blasts his way through the enemy ranks. He finds the Jaguar

Women blocking his path.

JAGUAR WOMAN

YOU!!!

BEN

Yeah, I know, I killed Lupe and Inez...

He runs off, they follow him. He leads them straight into the

grasp of the demon. He turns and watches as the demon tears

them apart.

BEN

Some people just have one track minds

Frenchy lights her fire bomb with Gonzales' cigarillo.

FRENCHY

Pardonez moi...

She flings her bomb into the creature's face, where it explodes.

The demon gives one final roar and dissipates.

INTERCUT WITH

INT. STOREHOUSE

John and Saxon watch as the demon vanishes.

JOHN

Let's move!

INTERCUT WITH

EXT. SANCTUARY

The door to the storehouse opens. John and Saxon lead their men

into the compound. The Yaquis join the fight against Dononvan's

men.

JOHN

Nice to have reinforcements.

92.

SAXON

I guess they had their fill of...

Alejandro comes up behind Saxon and cuts his throat. He faces

John.

ALEJANDRO

You have earned death, Grey Wolf...

death at my hands.

JOHN

Why bother? Your "people" will probably

tear you apart as they catch up with

you.

Alejandro advances.

ALEJANDRO

That is why you must die...I need

to tear out your heart and feed it

to the sacred flames...then they

they will embrace their god again!

John brings his rifle up, but Alejandro is on him before he can

fire. John knocks the knife out of Alejandro's hands, but

Alejandro grasps John about the throat.

ALEJANDRO

Witless mortal! This no mere man

who confronts you...

(a beat)

I AM TEZCATLIPOCA!!!

John struggles, grabbing at the knife. He gets his hands on it

and stabs Alejandro to the heart. The Yaqui sags into his arms,

and John flings him off

JOHN

Sic transit gloria mundi.

He gets up, dusts himself off, and goes over to Frenchy.

FRENCHY

Took you long enough.

JOHN

I was busy...

John looks the battlefield over. Most of Donovan's men are

trying to get away rather than shoot it out.

JOHN

Looks like it's just about over.

93.

John and Frenchy see out Gonzales standing over the dead body of

Alejandro.

JOHN

Has anybody seen Donovan, or the

Baroness?

GONZALES

Not as yet...

Behind them, a disheveled Donovan rises on his knees, holding

his pistol. He grins as he aims at the three of them. A shot

rings out o.s. Donovan jerks and falls flat on his face. John

looks around and sees Ben holstering one of his guns.

JOHN

Two down, one to go...

EXT. DESERT-DAY

The Baroness is riding away from Sanctuary. Briefly, she stops,

and looks back at the compound. She caresses her burned cheek,

frowns in the direction of the compound, and then kicks her

horse back into a fast gallop.

EXT. RIO GRANDE--DAY

Gonzales, John, Ben, and Frenchy ride up to the Rio Grande.

They stop in front of an old wooden bridge.

JOHN

We ran a fine course together, Major.

GONZALES

That we did, my friend...and don't

you worry...we will find her Excellency.

BEN

I wouldn't bet on it...that gal strikes

me as the type who lands on her feet.

Gonzales' expression become worried.

GONZALES

I hope you are wrong...that is one

woman I wouldn't want to spend my

life looking over my shoulder for.

FRENCHY

She's got enough problems of her

own...her superiors won't be happy

when she reports back to them.

94.

Gonzales slaps his forehead.

GONZALES

Carai...that reminds me...how am

I going to report this incident?

FRENCHY

Just leave out any references to

magic...and our names, of course.

GONZALES

Too bad really...Mexico owes you

a big debt...

He turns his horse around.

GONZALES

It was a joy working with the three

of you...vaya con Dios, my friends.

He rides away. Frenchy looks at John.

FRENCHY

Speaking of working together. We

did make a lively team didn't we?

JOHN

In more ways than one...I just hope

Mr. Buchanen doesn't mind.

FRENCHY

Don't worry, he's an old romantic

at heart.

Ben looks away theatrically.

BEN

(sotto voce)

Aw hell...they're startin' to get

all mushy now.

John looks at Frenchy's horse.

JOHN

You might want to think about changing

horses...that Connemara pony might

be fine for riding around the plantation...

FRENCHY

Hey...I'll have you know that this

little Irish princess will still be

going long after those Texas brushpoppers

you two ride are lying in our dust,

gasping for breath.

95.

John brings his horse closer to Frenchy's

JOHN

Really...you want to test that theory

out?

FRENCHY

No...I'd rather save my energy for

better things. Like this.

They lean together and kiss.

BEN

That's it, I'm outta here.

FADE OUT:

THE END
